Bill Miller opens this live concert recording — originally issued in 1992 — with the title track, a haunting ode to tradition that carries particular resonance given the artist’s identity as a Native American man fully engaged in the modern world. He follows that with a coming-of-age tune with a twist, “Different Drum,” which he cowrote with top Nashville songwriter/sideman Darrell Scott. Also included are versions of Miller’s best known composition, “Tumbleweed,” originally popularized by co-writer Peter Rowan, and a blues-tinged reading of the Michael Martin Murphey/Charles John Quarto classic “Geronimo’s Cadillac.” A warm and engaging performer who tours constantly, Miller tells of the stark events that led him to write “Still on the Run” and jokes with the audience about cranking the volume on a driving version of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” A great complement to Miller’s studio albums, Reservation Road Live reveals still more aspects of this multifaceted artist.
