Though he’s better known as a singer/songwriter who makes his points with lyrics as much as melody, on Loon, Mountain, Moon — originally issued in a limited pressing in 1991 — Bill Miller sings not a word, painting his pictures with his expressive flute playing and the organic sounds of nature. A baby’s cry subtly acknowledges the subject of “Mohican Lullaby,” while the hollow sound of a cold wind sets a very different tone for “The Little Bighorn March.” Miller, a member of the Mohican tribe who grew up on the Stockbridge-Munsee reservation in Wisconsin, offers a thoughtful assortment of ideas and atmospheres, from the opening meditation of the title track through the tribal history of “Canyon Dance” and the conflict of “Night Chase” to the hope and resolution of “Beyond the Battle” and “Amazing Grace.” Reaching far beyond both the new age and traditional tribal styles generally associated with Native instrumental music, Miller adds a vibrant new branch to that still-growing tree.
